French Immersion

What is French Immersion?

French Immersion is a program of studies in which French is the language of instruction for a significant part of the school day.

French Immersion is a program designed specifically for English speaking children and their English speaking parents.

The objective of the program is full mastery of the English language, functional fluency in French, as well as an understanding and appreciation of the French culture.

What does it look like here at Dr. Brosseau School?

Cultural Activities at Dr Brosseau School

Throughout the year our school celebrates French culture. Our school has hosted groups such as “les Bucherons” and the musical group “Dans l’shed” in the 2015/16 school year.  These groups have highlighted French music and culture to the school population.

In March our school celebrates French Culture during Francophone week. Some of the activities that take part during this week are bingo games, French films, learning to play “spoons” etc. Francophone week concludes with a French Canadian meal and an afternoon of Carnival activities in the snow. It’s always a delicious and fun filled day.

DELF French International Diplomacy Proficiency Diploma

Lakeland Catholic Schools, in partnership with Edmonton Catholic Schools is now offering the opportunity for all immersion students in grades 10-12 to have their French language skills officially recognized.  The Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française (DELF) is an official diploma from France’s national Ministry of Education.  It is valid for life, awarded and recognized around the world.  The DELF officially certifies the ability of students to use the French language in real-life situations.

The test covers all four language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).  In order to succeed and obtain the diploma, students must obtain at least 50 percent, with a minimum of 5/25 for each skill.

French Immersion Literacy Strategies

Our teachers use the best teaching practices and are constantly updating their knowledge by attending Professional Development. They are trained to teach effective reading strategies through the First Steps and Stepping Out programs. Students can be evaluated on these reading strategies and comprehension by the GB+ and DRA assessment tools.

Also, French Immersion students at Dr. Brosseau School are fortunate to have access to the newest technology including smart boards, individual laptops, document cameras, etc.
